For this assignment you need to either call or meet with an agency representative to learn more about their programs. YOU CANNOT DO THIS SIMPLY BY LOOKING ONLINE. DO NOT EMAIL SOMEONE THESE QUESTIONS AND EXPECT THEM TO ANSWER THEM FOR YOU. It would be unprofessional to request that they spend their time typing up responses.
Contact either a local social service agency or NGO (non-governmental organization) from your home community. Inform them they you are a student learning about social welfare programs and you were hoping to speak to someone that can share a little detail about the mission and role of the agency.
You can create your own list of questions for the agency representative but be sure to include areas that help you better understand:
What is their title and role at the agency (REQUIRED)
What types of services are offered to the community.
Who do they serve? Who don’t they serve (also known as exclusionary criteria)?
Why did they decide to deliver these type of services (this will usually align with their mission)?
What policies (or funders) at the state, local, and national level influence what they do?
How do they think they best help clients/consumers?
What barriers get in their way?
Anything else YOU would like to know about them.
You can either type up a summary of the findings or report by each question/answer. Complete sentences and appropriate grammar are expected for either format. Include a one-paragraph reflection on what you learned or what surprised you (5 points).
