This semester we have talked about the broad changes—in technology, economics, social experience—that occur through the processes of modernization.
We then talked about the incredible excitement and anxiety people living through the changes would experience, and how detective fiction emerges as a form well suited to this turmoil.
Your task in this essay is to make a version of this argument in your own words. Choose one of the stories we have read and use it to show how the story of a detective on the case might offer its readers a vision of how to capitalize on the opportunity of the new world, or a sense of comfort about how this new world of mystery is still fundamentally understandable.
