The purpose of this assignment is for you to use interactive online crime mappin

The purpose of this assignment is for you to use interactive online crime mapping systems to create crime maps. You will complete this assignment using five different web sites. Note that some of these web sites allow you to map multiple cities and jurisdictions as they are general companies that have data from a wide range of places (e.g., raidsonline.com, crimereports.com, spotcrime.com). Other web sites are hosted by individual cities or police departments (e.g., Chicago, Baltimore, Seattle). In this assignment you are not to use just one web site to create five maps from different cities.
You are to use five different web sites to create five maps. If this is not clear, contact the professor for further explanation. Importantly, the point of the assignment is to see the different systems that are available and that can be used to map crime online. Below are some suggestions for individual web sites, but feel free to find other sites for the assignment as there are many more out there:
These links may be out of date, they change very frequently, and you can search around and find them on your own.
Once you select the five different web sites, you should read the instructions and “help” information to learn how to query and create maps. All of these web sites have been developed for the average citizen and they should be fairly easy to use, so I will not be providing specific instructions on how to use each website.
The point of this assignment is to learn about the technology, not necessarily the in-depth detail about crime patterns in one city!
Be sure to conduct queries that make sense, and it may take more than a few queries to produce five usable maps with data. You might have to change crime type, area covered, etc. Don’t turn in maps with no crime, it is boring!
For each of the five maps, you will complete the following items. Use the bold headers below for the write up of each map:
Title: Title the map with the city name, crime data shown in the map, date range covered in the map,. You may include a neighborhood or smaller area as well if it is appropriate. For example: “Baltimore, Maryland: Robbery and Sexual Assaults, June 1 to June 30, 2013”
Next include and image of the map: Copy and paste your final maps from your desktop into PowerPoint. You might have to play around with “cut and paste” and “paint” or with a newer OS “snip” to do this, or use screen capture software, like “Jing.” This is a technology class, so it is your responsibility to figure out how to get the map into PowerPoint. Crop the images the best you can so only the legend and the map are showing. You will be graded on the quality of the map image, its borders and overall appearance.
Source: The name of the city hosting the website and the web address. For example, “Baltimore, Maryland: http://www.baltimorepolice.org/your-community/crime-map” or “Boca Raton, Florida: https://www.crimereports.com/”
Descriiption: Include a paragraph (about 1/3 of a page) describing what is shown on the map with a brief interpretation (i.e., what is it telling you or an average citizen about crime or activity in that city). Again, the purpose of these maps is to inform citizens, so try to think from that perspective. So you will have five PowerPoint slides, each with a map and a descriiption. The presentation quality will be part of the grading process.
General Impressions: On a final slide, describe your general impressions about using each of the mapping sites (e.g., ease of use, understandability, quality of maps that you were able to create, etc.).
You will be graded on the thoughtfulness of your queries, the readability of the maps, the write up, and the overall professionalism and format of your PowerPoint document. Think of this assignment as something you would submit to a boss in a work situation or as an example of your work product for a job interview. Some specific things to watch out for:
Be sure to include the date range of the data in the title.
Be specific about what type of crime is mapped based on your specific query (e.g., all crime versus violent crime versus robbery).
Do not stretch the image, but be sure that the ratio is the same as when you captured it. To ensure this right click on the image and go to size.
Crop the image closely so unnecessary information is not included, but be sure to include a legend. In some cases, you might include the legend as a separate image.
Put borders around your images so they look professional.
Don’t use maps that don’t make any sense or have too much or too little crime on them.
Take your time and write the paragraphs, you have time to do this assignment.
You will submit a single PowerPoint file within Canvas, with all five maps and their write-ups. Please do not put two maps on one page. If one map and its write up require two pages/slides, that’s fine, but still use a new page for each map write up.
