Questions 1a, 1b, and 2 are based one the movie “The Fountainhead”
1a- What does each of the main characters value and why? Watch the distinction between initial intentions and final endurance of action. Think about why certain characters succeed and fail. Listen to what each character does, what each says, and what moves each character. Assume every word is intended. Think about which characters are self-controlled. Importantly, watch very carefully for the basis upon which the perceived success or failure is grounded for each character, and who controls that basis of success or failure. Think about how each character prioritizes values and how these values contend with each other. Watch for causes and effects, who manipulates and who is manipulated, and how it is accomplished. Think about the source of power and why so. For our purpose, the main characters are Howard Roark, Dominique Francon, Gail Wynand, Peter Keating, Ellsworth Toohey and Henry Cameron. And, let us add The Banner itself as a character, and think about what it represents metaphorically in the story.
1b- What is the nature of each character, what does each character represent as a metaphor in the story’s lesson? What is your opinion of the characters in a “validation by Likes” Facebook society? Is Roark a leader at the end, and, if so, how did he progress as one? How does Roark manage public opinion? Who failed and who succeeded and why? Did you admire, respect or disdain any character, why? It is crucial that you provide cited examples to support your view (video cited as HH:MM:SS).
2- In the movie, The Fountainhead, Ayn Rand, gives us complex but, for our purpose, reasonably distinct characters. The Assessment Chart assists in sorting it out. There are four business persons. 1) Where is the seat, or source, of power for each of the four characters, meaning who controls the thing that moves the respective person? 2) For each of the four, what is the advantage and disadvantage of having that seat of power where that seat of power exists. 3 ) In your view, articulate your insights as to why you believe three of the four business persons failed, and why did Roark succeed?
3- It may be a context remembered by you, or observed currently by you. Please comment on a context of ridicule being used, either upon you, by you, or between or among others; discuss the purpose of the ridicule and whether it was effective to manipulate the target (if it can be discerned). It could be part of a political campaign, sports, a social movement, or otherwise. You may have multiple examples, but you must have one primary example that could stand alone as your sole response; that is, multiple average responses will not satisfy a requirement for one deeply assessed example. In reflecting upon ridicule and shame, identify how character, such as you’ve defined it, addresses or reconciles ridicule and shame.
