Identify a news item such as a magazine, journal, or newspaper article which involves a political issue, theme, idea, or subject. You are to paste an accessible link to the article at the top of your application paper (ensure that the link does not require a subscriiption to access). In your paper, you are to first provide a brief summary of the article, then choose a relevant / applicable concept from the weekly reading, briefly explain your understanding of the concept, then explain how the concept is relevant to, or helps to elucidate the contents of the article. The concept cannot be mentioned in the article, because the point of these papers is for you to connect the dots and recognize the relevance and applicability of class concepts to the contemporary political landscape. In other words, you may not find an article about freedom of speech, then connect it to Freedom of speech conceptually. Rather you might find an article about something that you believe is a violation of the right to freedom of speech, then proceed to explain why. Be sure to explicitly state what concept you have chosen. I should not have to guess or read between the lines. Do not choose concepts that do not have a theoretical dimension to them, as you would not be able to apply a simple term to a current event or issue in a meaningful way. For example, you could not choose a party caucus or a joint congressional committee as your concept, because they do not have a theoretical component. Lastly, you are to critically examine the article, and take a position on the event, issue or topic described in it. For this reason, you will likely want to choose articles that involve some form of controversy, debate or polarization. In other words, if you were to choose an article about the president’s age relative to past presidents, there would not be much there to agree or disagree with, and it would be difficult to find a relevant / applicable concept. The hypothetical examples below should help to further clarify what an ideal application paper looks like.
● You might find an article about how Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, amended the Turkish constitution in order to stay in office longer than he was permitted to. You could then use the concept of constitutionalism from chapter 1 to critically examine the article. You might conclude that Erdoğan’s actions contradicted the very point of constitutionalism. Similarly, you could choose the concept of checks and balances in order to explain that in a properly functioning democracy, other arms of government should have prevented the president from accumulating so much power.
● You might find an article about the conflict between the United States and Russia regarding the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO. You could use the concept of sovereignty to argue that both Russia and the West have violated Ukraine’s sovereignty by using it as a geopolitical chess piece.
Do not use the above examples or examples that I have given in class. The purpose of these papers is to demonstrate that you are capable of recognizing and applying these concepts to the real world on your own. Papers should be 1 to 2 pages long (This means a minimum of 1 entire page), 12 point font, double spaced, with 1 inch margins.
