Goal: To critically reflect on Johnson and Parnell’s (2016) major claims about the impact of population aging in the U.S. and examine how they use these data to formulate arguments about public policy.
Question: How do they define the “challenges and opportunities” ahead and how do they use data to support these claims? Keep in mind, their opening statement is not just a statement of fact, it is an argument that needs to be proven and supported with evidence. They say:
We are living in an era of disruptive demographics . . .Major shifts in the size, composition, and geographic distribution of the U.S. population are dramatically transforming our social, economic, and political institutions, creating challenges and opportunities along the way. Nowhere are these shifts more apparent than in the aging of America. . . [2016: 9].
Instructions: Type a 2-3page essay reflecting on this main argument and also explaining the following points and data. I’m asking you to: 1) write about this article as if I have not yet read it myself, and 2) include evidence (quotes from the article), to support not only your opinions and claims, but theirs’ too.

2) The Demographics: What specific evidence do they use to present and support their key points? Give me at least three examples (with data), to reveal why the demographics of aging now are unique and important. What seems to be the most important data? (3 points)
3) The Challenges and Opportunities: Read carefully. They don’t present all the challenges first and then all the opportunities later. They actually present challenges and opportunities in pairs, where one issue creates both a challenge and an opportunity. What major challenges and opportunities do they predict? There are many. Present and describe at least 2 issues from both perspectives. (5 points)

I am looking for: 1) well-developed answers to the questions above, 2) with good supporting examples from the text, and 3) complete sentence structure, proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
