For this project you will write a brief technical descriiption AND a RELATED set of technical instructions that could be used in a field of your choice.

THIS IS ONLY A DRAFT OF THE INSTRUCTIONS PART. I WILL PUT IN SEPERATE ORDER FOR OTHER PARTS.
For this project you will write a brief technical descriiption AND a RELATED set of technical instructions that could be used in a field of your choice. You’ll submit a draft of the instructions to the class so that you have a chance to learn from each other’s work.
Begin by choosing a field that interests you. This could be your major in school, or the career you intend to enter, or the job you have now, or a hobby/sport you pursue. Then follow the directions below.
1.Think of a process or task related to your chosen field that you know well enough to explain step by step. You should be able to complete the project based on your own knowledge of the task (don’t copy or paraphrase the steps from a website).
You may not write any of the following:
how to cook something (a recipe)
how to change a tire
how to change your oil
how to tie a tie
Again, choose a topic that is relevant to your current job or your field of study or a hobby/sport you know well. Also, choose something that is complex enough to write a detailed document. If your instructions are too simple (few steps requiring little work on your part) then you won’t do well on the project. The complexity of the topic you chose will be considered in determining the project’s grade.
2. Identify your audience: In the comment box where you submit the project, describe your intended audience and how and where they might use your documents. For example, you could be writing part of a manual for experts in your field, or a school handout for an audience of 8 year olds, or an attached file for your co-workers, or an instruction sheet for people with no prior knowledge of your field.
3. Technical descriiption: Write a 1 page (minimum, double spaced) technical descriiption to the audience you’ve identified of an item, place, or process related to the instructions you will create in Step #4. Adhere to the following rules:
• Start with a specific and precise title
• Introduce your item, place, or process with a formal sentence definition (see page 196 – Microgenre: Technical Definitions) followed by an overall descriiption that defines the item or process and explains its importance.
• Continue to describe by features, function, or stages
• Expand your descriiption using senses, similes, metaphors, and analogies
• Use the principles of design from Chapter 13 and graphics or pictures to make your descriiption more reader friendly
• Conclude by showing the item, place, or process in action.
For example, if for your set of instructions you are writing the steps involved in cleaning the Starbucks’ frappucino machine, you could write an accompanying technical descriiption of a frappucino, or of the machine, or of the layout of the barista area.
4. Set of instructions: Now write a set of instructions for your chosen audience of a process or task.
Your set of instructions should include these basic features as needed:
Specific and precise title.
Introduction
List of parts, tools, conditions required if appropriate.
Sequentially ordered steps.
Graphics if appropriate (if you use these, make sure they are labeled and referred to in your text)
Safety information if appropriate.
Warnings, notes, or cautions as appropriate.
Conclusion that signals the completion of the task.
