1.Since your Midterm will be a reflective essay (like your Portfolio), you’ll want to take some time to reflect before you start writing. Take this opportunity to look back through all the work you’ve done in this course. Most of it will be in your Journal. You’ll want to look at your drafts and peer review materials as well, including feedback your peers and I have left for you. It may be helpful to look through Canvas, too. If you’re fuzzy on any of the assignment directions, take a few minutes to read over assignment sheets, or perhaps look through our Discussions.
2.Read back through the “Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s) and Key Concepts” (Links to an external site.) portion of the syllabus. Also look back at what you wrote about them in the Studio 1 Discussion.
3.Write your essay (600-800 words) about…
2-3 SLO’s or Key Concepts that you are truly engaging with (i.e. learning, practicing, getting the hang of). Quote from your own work to explain and to illustrate how you are engaging with each one of these concepts (this will require quoting your own work 2-3 times).
Also write about…
1-2 SLO’s or Key Concepts that you are still grappling with. Explain why they are still “muddy” for you. Be specific. In your essay, brainstorm ways that you could better engage with this concept/these concepts in the second half of this course. Refer to at least 3 resources that could help you, making sure to quote at least one of them. Look to course resources first: anything provided via Canvas (there are lots of resources here, and don’t forget to look back into Studios and through the readings). Making connections between different parts of class will be helpful to you in your reflection.
Again, since this is practice for your Portfolio…
Use vocabulary terms from this document (Links to an external site.) in your Midterm to help you explain. Hopefully you took some notes above when you were asked to read through it again.
Use digital design strategies in your midterm. What can you do as a writer to make your digital essay easier to read and navigate? I suggest starting with headings. What else could help your reader? Hyperlinks? Screenshots? Something else? Remember that your goal is not to make your midterm essay gaudy: your goal is to communicate effectively and intelligently, and digital design strategies can help you do that.
