Choose one of the following topics based on the plots and settings in the stories from Unit 1.
Each topic requires you to focus on some aspect and to explore why it is important to our
interpretation of the characters or the story. Your essay must have a central thesis—an
argument or debatable statement that will take the essay beyond a simple discussion. This
thesis, provided near the end of the introduction, presents the argument and three main points
of support in one clear sentence (E.g.: In Munro’s “The Found Boat,” the boat itself has both
literal and figurative implications as it represents A, B, and C.)
The subsections on interpretation,
discovery, and close reading should be especially useful as you select a topic and brainstorm
ideas for the essay. You should also review the file “MLA Format and Essay
Conventions,” provided for you under “Syllabus and Administrative Information” on D2L.
Note, in particular, how to quote from a story, cite the page number in parentheses, and
include an entry for the story in a Works Cited page. No secondary sources are necessary for
this assignment. If you choose to use a source, ensure that it is reputable and scholarly, and
cautiously document all borrowed quotations, arguments, and ideas with parenthetical
citations and Works Cited entries.
Please see the syllabus for instructions on how to submit your essay. If you have any
questions or would like help, please let me know.
