Choose any three documents from the selected excerpts from this week’s assigned reading and analyze them through the lens of US & Latin American relations during the Cold War era
Provide a Summary (Part A ) AND Reflection (Part B) of the documents you chose from this week’s assigned reading. Try as best as you can to put the documents “in conversation,” meaning compare and contrast viewpoints or statements, drawing from specific examples, for BOTH Part A and Part B. Word count is flexible (aim for 100-150 words for each Part, for a total of 200-300 words for Step 1).
Part A (10 points). Summary. What political positions assumptions about US and Latin American relations are expressed in the documents? Who is the intended audience and how are the main arguments (for or against) a policy framed in relation to assumed interests or perspectives of that audience? Are there both explicit (direct) and implicit (hidden or implied) messages communicated in the documents? If so, what do you think might have been the rational or outcome of such messages? If the author (or speaker) were addressing a different audience, do you think the message (or strategy for conveying the message) might be different? Why and how so?
Part B (10 points). Reflection. Taken together, what story about U.S. and Latin American relations during the Cold War era starts to emerge? What are some underlying assumptions about national security, foreign relations, or enemies and allies are evident? How do perspectives of US and Latin American relations change when read “North by South” as opposed to “South by North”?
