Social institutions exist to perform functions necessary for the survival of society. One of these functions is socialization, the reproduction of the roles, beliefs, norms, values, folkways, etc., that unify a society. Socialization creates boundaries that distinguish society members from non-members and assigns roles and statuses among the members.
2a. Note the age, gender, ethnicity, race, social status, clothing, and roles of the principal characters you observed in part 1.
2b. If you chose 1a, describe how the age, gender, ethnicity, race, clothing were related to the social status and roles of the children. Were the children similar in these characteristics? If one or more children stood out from the crowd, how did their differences affect their relative social status and roles?
If you chose 1b, describe the stereotyped roles children would identify with. Discuss education (1b), look for evidence that the authors make assumptions about each of the attributes above. If these attributes are not discussed, do you believe that discussing them would change the arguments or conclusions?
2c. Observe how the children group themselves or are grouped. Look for behavior that indicates cooperation or conflict. Look for demonstrations of authority or power. What meaning do the people/characters seem to give to their actions?
2d. Name and describe at least one mechanism of socialization you have observed. How do individuals or groups cooperate or resist socialization? How effective are their efforts?
2e. Using checkpoints 5.1-5.5 in the text (note these are on different pages) and based on your observations, evaluate socialization processes. Remember to describe these in the big three social theories (structural-functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic-interaction).
