approximately 500 words (ok to be a bit more or less) + works cited page/entries (in MLA–alphabetical order, double spaced, hanging indents, etc.)
writing about two or three of the poems that stood out most to you and elaborate on why. Perhaps it was the IMAGERY, TONE, ALLUSIONS, or FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE that caught your attention. Maybe it was her PERSONA poems that stuck out most, how she can render some characters so realistically.
As with the previous R.P. on Smith’s work, I want the focus of your writing to be on poems we did NOT cover in class, though your RP can include/make reference to some of our class discussion(s), and perhaps how that led to better understanding of other poems by Wade.
As your response will likely discuss a few poems, provide multiple paragraphs, using transitional words/phrases (Links to an external site.) to help segue from one to the next. I encourage you to DEFINE terms, then APPLY THEM to the poem(s).
Also be sure to cite the poem(s) from Wade’s collection according to the handouts (that is, providing line numbers, slashes / for line breaks, and follow-up explanation for every time you quote, paraphrase, and/or summarize the poem). Include a works cited entry (it does not have to be a separate page) for both the poem(s) and any outside material(s) you incorporate into the response. Outside sources are not required, but should you look anything up and include those details in the response, be sure to provide both the in-text citation and a works cited entry for the textbook definition, website, blog post, interview, etc. Run spell (and style)
Remember to identify poems (titles go in “quotes”), provide lines/passages from the poems as evidence, and include some analysis/interpretation afterwards.
One final question—food for thought—that might help to start the writing process: While many of her poems are epistolary (as in, taking the form of a letter), what makes the title Postage Due fitting? What does it mean if postage is due? Might any of these poems (letters) overdue?
